2-Day Tsavo East Safari from Mombasa & Diani

2 daysScheduled group safari

About this journey

A 2-day Tsavo East safari from Mombasa is the classic way to add wildlife to a Kenyan beach holiday. One night at Ashnil Aruba Lodge, inside the park beside the Aruba Dam, gives you an afternoon game drive and a sunrise drive, the two best times of day for seeing predators.

Tsavo East is one of the largest national parks in Africa, and its open, dry bush makes animals easy to spot. It is famous for its red elephants, dusted in the park's iron-rich soil, and also holds buffalo, giraffe, zebra, lion, cheetah and dry-country species such as gerenuk and fringe-eared oryx. The Aruba Dam draws wildlife to drink right in front of the lodge, especially in the dry months.

You leave your resort after an early breakfast and arrive at the lodge for lunch, then head out on an afternoon game drive. After a sunrise drive on day two and breakfast at the lodge, you are back at your beach resort before lunch.

Best time to go: the dry seasons, June to October and January to March, concentrate wildlife around the water. Tsavo is open all year, and the green season after the rains is quieter and lush.

Who it suits: first-time safari-goers staying on the coast, families, and couples who want to see elephants and big cats without committing to a long trip. Because the lodge is inside the park, there is no long transfer before your afternoon game drive.

Ashnil Aruba Lodge overlooks the Aruba Dam, one of the main water sources in this part of Tsavo East, so you can often watch elephants, buffalo and antelope drinking from the lodge itself. Pack a light fleece for the early morning drive, a hat and sunscreen for the open plains, and binoculars: Tsavo's distances are big.
