10-Day Kenya & Tanzania Safari: Mara, Serengeti & Ngorongoro

10 daysPrivate departure - any date

About this journey

The Maasai Mara and the Serengeti are one ecosystem divided by a border. This 10-day Kenya and Tanzania safari crosses it overland, following the same plains the migration herds use, and finishes in the Ngorongoro Crater, so you see East Africa's three most celebrated wildlife areas in one trip.

After a night in Nairobi, you drive through the Great Rift Valley to the Maasai Mara for three nights, enough to explore the reserve in depth and, in season, wait at the Mara River for a crossing. On day five you cross into Tanzania at the Isebania border. Regulations do not allow Kenyan safari vehicles to operate in Tanzania's parks, so you switch to a Tanzanian-registered vehicle and guide at the border and continue into the northern Serengeti.

Two nights in the central Serengeti around the Seronera River valley put you in some of the best big-cat country on the continent, with resident lion prides, leopard in the riverine trees and cheetah on the open plains. From there the route climbs to the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, a collapsed volcano whose floor holds lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo and one of Tanzania's few accessible black rhino populations.

The safari ends in Arusha, close to Kilimanjaro International Airport, which makes it easy to fly home, climb Kilimanjaro or continue to Zanzibar for a beach finish.

Best time to go: July to October follows the migration into the Mara and northern Serengeti. From December to March the herds are in the southern Serengeti for the calving season, and the route can be adjusted to follow them.

Good to know: you will need a Kenya eTA and a Tanzania visa, and the border crossing day is a long one. We handle the paperwork guidance, the vehicle change and all park permits.
