This 7-day Tanzania safari and Zanzibar holiday packs the highlights of the northern circuit into five days, then flies you to the Indian Ocean for a beach finish. It suits travellers who want the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater but still want to end the trip with their feet in the sand.
The safari starts at Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport and heads first to Tarangire National Park, known for its giant baobab trees and some of the largest elephant herds in Tanzania. From there you continue to the central Serengeti for two nights in the Seronera valley, the park's most reliable area for lion, leopard and cheetah, and from July to October within reach of the migration in the north.
On day four you drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and the following morning you descend into the crater for a game drive on its floor, a self-contained world of grassland, swamp and soda lake that holds lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo and black rhino. After the drive you fly from the Manyara airstrip or Arusha to Zanzibar, arriving in time for sunset.
In Zanzibar you have a beach day on the island's north or east coast, plus a private tour of Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of carved doors, narrow alleys and Swahili, Arab and Indian history, and a spice farm visit. The trip ends with a transfer to Zanzibar airport for your flight home.
Best time to go: June to October is dry and ideal for both the safari and the beach. January and February are hot, clear and great for the calving season in the southern Serengeti. The long rains in April and May make some camps close.
