Kenya - Where the Wild Was Named

The word "safari" is Swahili, and Swahili is Kenya's tongue - this is the land where the journey itself was named. From our home in Nairobi, the wild unfolds in every direction: the Maasai Mara's endless gold to the west, Amboseli's elephants beneath Kilimanjaro to the south, the flamingo-pink Rift Valley lakes to the north, and the warm coral sands of the Indian Ocean coast to the east.

The Maasai Mara is the crown - 1,500 square kilometres of open savanna where all of the Big Five roam and where, from July to September, over two million wildebeest and zebra surge across the Mara River in the Great Migration, the largest overland wildlife movement on Earth.

But Kenya rewards those who go further: black rhino in Lake Nakuru's sanctuary, hippo-filled dawns on Lake Naivasha, the peaks of Mount Kenya - Africa's second-highest mountain - and the northern frontier lands of Samburu, home to species found nowhere else.
